Gordon celebrates its 150th year with a day long Sesquicentennial Celebration scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010. Bring the entire family – and your extended family – as a picnic and many family-oriented activities are planned.

Games and activities for the kids, including an old fashioned 3-legged race, greased pig contest, egg toss, gunny sack races and Ye Old Toy Shoppe. There will be a variety of old-time toys available to purchase and a children’s bike raffle, too!

Ladies get ready for the vintage dress contest and hat contest with many categories including (for dress) Oldest Complete Original Authentic in Travel Attire, Housekeeping (Apron), Petticoat & Pantaloon, Original Wedding Gown, Sleeping Attire, and Bathing Suits. Categories for the Hat contest are Tallest, Widest, Most Colorful, Creative and Elaborate.

There will be a Whisker Growing Contest for the men with categories including Longest, Whitest, Youngest, Handlebars, Fullest, Curliest, Goatee, Reddest, Blackest, Oldest Man with Beard, & Mutton Chops!

All contests will be judged.

A picnic lunch will be offered (free will donation), along with live music, a stockade – jail ‘yer partner or get ‘em out, dessert basket auction, vintage car and farm equipment show, horse and buggy rides and more!

This triathlon is poised to be the "must do" end of the year race! Why? Because it is not only going to be a great challenge, but a PARTY!

We have 3 formats for the 600M Swim, 14 Mile Road Bike, 3.1 Mile Trail Run sprint course:

FAT CAPITALIST
Doin’ the whole thing by yourself.

IMPERIALISTS
2-person relay (male, female, co-ed)

Each person does a full triathlon, and then tags off to teammate. You have to alternate triathlons. In other words, one person cannot do two triathlons back-to-back. Be prepared for mechanical mishaps and fatigue. If there is a mechanical problem, you will need to solve it ASAP. Be sure to pace yourself, stay hydrated and eat right so you can finish strong.

COMRADES
3-person relay (male, female, co-ed (any mix of male to female)
Each person does one segment in the triathlon. One person swims, and then tags off to biker, biker then tags off to runner. Each person HAS to do a leg in each triathlon. You can mix it up, but all three members of the team must do a segment in every triathlon.

NOTE: These rules are subject to change without regards to the democratic process. The details of the tag zone, the tagging process and other race specifics will be explained in the mandatory pre-race meeting on Friday September 10th at 5:00 pm or 7:00 pm at Pattison State Park (one person from each team must be present).

The person/team that does the most triathlons in the 5/10-hour period wins their respective race. You can do one triathlon, stop throw some meat and potatoes on the grill, hang out w/ friends or, you can do each triathlon back-to-back. The swim course closes at the 10-hour mark. If you start the swim at 9:59 you will do one morefull triathlon. Your order of finish, plus the number of triathlons completed, will determine your overall finish.

We’ll have great food, shirts for athletes, commemorative pint glasses, swag and awards. You won't want to miss this year's BURRITO UNION 5 & 10 HOUR TRI!

NOTE: Book your hotel or campsite very early this year as the Northshore Inline Marathon is the same weekend. Pattison is a great campground and you are already at the race venue in the morning.

Teams that break down can keep going by joining this division during the race as well so you don't have to call it quits.

NOTE: Demonstration Division teams are NOT eligible for placement awards.

Awards

10 Hour Awards
Hand crafted awards for the Fat Capitalists (soloists) will be given out to the following age groups: 29 and under, 30 to 44, 45 and up. For the Imperialists and Comrades, the top three teams in each division will receive an award.

5 Hour Awards
Hand crafted awards will be given out to the top male and female overall Fat Capitalists (soloists), along with the top Imperialists and Comrades receivings awards as well.

All teams/individuals are eligible for the door-prizes to be given away their award ceremonies! Note: We do not mail out awards so please stay or find someone to pick up your award.

Food: Athletes will get grill tickets to use towards burger and/or brats. There will also be an athlete food tent with your typical race carbs and liquids. With the race being so long, it is advised that you bring the food you are used to eating and training with to avoid stomach problems if you have a history of such problems. We'll be grilling for family and friends, but ask for donations to the youth fitness foundation that we'll be collecting.

Note: This will be a USAT sanctioned race. Non USAT members will need to pay $10 for a one day license (this applies to all participants).

September 11th & 12th the Pro Musky Tournament Trail is making a stop in Superior Wisconsin to fish the waters of the St. Louis River.

Musky Hunter’s Fall Meltdown is PMTT’s fourth and final qualifying event before the World Championships to be held on Lake Minnetonka, MN in October.

“The Professional Musky Tournament Trail events are the most high profile, exciting, educational and entertaining musky tournaments in the country.

The PMTT's high energy format has been developed not only with the Pro's in mind, but also the dozens and dozens of other excellent musky anglers who may have the desire and ability to become Pro's or just enjoy a little competition and want to have a good time. Success in the PMTT can take you down many roads, no matter what your skill level. Come join the PMTT and have fun.

Anglers have the opportunity to compete in as many qualifying events as they choose, whether it is just one event or the entire tournament trail.

The PMTT contestants will be competing for a cash and prize value that could total well over $220,000 throughout the year. With the possibility of winning over $21,000 at every event and over $40,000 in cash and prizes at the year-end Ranger Boats World Championship, the PMTT is taking musky fishing to an all time high, developing the sport and promoting musky conservation.” - Tim Widlacki, PMTT Tournament Director.

Tournament Central for Musky Hunter’s Fall Meltdown is Barker’s Island Inn & Conference Center.

Tournament is limited to 125 teams. Registration entry forms and fees are due 30 days prior to the event - don't wait, register today!

Tournament hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday with the awards presentation beginning between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Registration will take place Friday evening between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. followed by a mandatory pre-tournament meeting for all teams promptly at 7:00pm (location TBA).

Teams consist of one or two people and participants must be at least 18 years old or fish with parent or legal guardian.

The Center Against Sexual and Domestic Abuse, Inc. (CASDA) will hold their annual 5k Walk/Run to End Abuse on Saturday, September 25, 2010. This event raises funds to support CASDA in providing services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse. Angela is a vibrant young woman.

Angela is Daniel's Mom.

Angela is a single mom working towards a nursing degree.

Angela has cancer.

In April 2010 she was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (cancer of the white blood cells), she was immediately transferred to the U of M where they began aggressive chemotherapy. She continues treatment here at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth; admitted for each round of chemo and will require 2 additional years of maintenance chemotherapy. Angela is unable to continue with her nursing degree or work during her treatments.

In the late 1800s, Captain Alexander McDougall dreamed of producing a vessel capable of transporting Lake Superior ore of iron and copper, grain from the Midwest, timber from Michigan and Great Lakes fish to fill the ever-increasing demands from around the country. Thus, began the development of the steel-hulled “whalebacks”.

You will get a rare, behind-the-scenes tour of the Fraser Shipyard, whose earliest beginnings were McDougall’s American Steel Barge Company. The tour will include Fraser’s newest venture, the Lake Assault Boats production facility. There are a limited number of tickets available and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.

McDougall’s Shipyards—How They Worked.

Dr Matthew Daley presents his current research on McDougall’s shipyards in Duluth and Superior. He will present his findings on the physical layout of the yards, the workforce, the tools and equipment they used and their impact on their communities. Dr Daley is an Associate Professor of History at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI.

The Meteor’s Machinery—A Museum within a Museum
3:00 to 3:45 PM
A technical paper published in 1943 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers described the machinery spaces of ships of 1893 as being “of oil squirt cans, dancing connecting rods, and sweating coal passers and firemen.” This description would have applied to all Great Lakes ships built in the early 1900’s, and to many salt water ships. Very few of these reciprocating machinery– Scotch boiler steam plants still exist intact worldwide. Fortunately, the METEOR is an exception. A visitor to her engine room will feel that the oiler just put down his squirt can, and the coal passer his shovel. Join museum volunteer and Professional Engineer Roger Pellett for an in-depth discussion of the METEOR’s antique steam machinery, its design, the way that it worked, and unique features it incorporated for operation in the freshwater environment of the Great Lakes.

SS John Ericsson—A Long and Productive Career

Elmer Engman, author of In the Belly of a Whale, leads us on a tour of the life of one of the most productive whalebacks, the JOHN ERICSSON. The ERICSSON was the next whaleback steamer to be launched after the ROCKEFELLER/SOUTH PARK/METEOR and the abundance of documentation about her will ultimately help guide parts of the restoration of the METEOR to her ROCKEFELLER era. Mr. Engman leads diving expeditions around the world, is the founder of Gales of November, and a long-time board member of Superior Public Museums which operates the METEOR.

The METEOR still has elements of her original patented features (if you know where to look), plus evidence of her numerous refitting prompted by changes in technology, profitability and cargos.

Ice Storms, Good Food, and Machine Grease.
Hear the story of a typical Great Lakes sailor’s life from an experienced Meteor tour guide. The tour will take you through the entire ship, including the pilot house and engine room.

Tours will start in the lobby of the SS METEOR Museum. Sections of the tours will be outside so dress accordingly. Please wear comfortable shoes.

Keynote Evening Speaker Pat Labadie Presents
“McDougall: The Dreamer and His Dream”
5:30 to 6:15 PM

Pat Labadie’s richly illustrated presentation will explore what influenced this remarkable man, from his youth to his experiences on the Great Lakes and overseas that would ultimately inspire him to develop revolutionary concepts for shipbuilding. Pat will discuss the evolution of the Whaleback design within the context of contemporary ships, both in the United States and abroad.

Pat Labadie is a well-known historian, speaker and writer about the Great Lakes. From 1973-2001, he was the director of Duluth’s Canal Park Marine Museum (now Lake Superior Maritime Visitors’ Center) and is currently the historian for NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuary in Alpena, MI. He was co-author of Pride of the Inland Seas, an illustrated history of the Duluth-Superior port.

The annual Douglas County HCE Craft Sale sponsored by the Douglas County Home and Community Educators will be held at the Head of the Lakes Fairgrounds in Superior, 4700 Tower Ave.

Several area crafters will have a variety of items for sale.

There will be a $1:00 admission fee, which will include a door prize drawing.

Also a bake sale, tea table and lunch will be served.

Proceeds from the sale are used to provide scholarships for UWS and WITC students alternately, as well as scholarships for members and other educational programs and community services.

The building is handicap accessible.

Where can you go for an hour, put your networking skills to work, have lunch “meet new people and generate new business”? The Progressive Power Lunch! The luncheon is sponsored by The Chamber and is scheduled for January 26th at The Shack. Registration is from 11:30am to 12:00, with the luncheon from 12:00 to approximately 1:15pm.

You must pre-register to attend this event, as table assignments will be made. The pre-registration deadline is October 12th, with an investment of $20.00 for the luncheon.

Also, if you registered for the luncheon and can’t attend, please send someone in your place as the meals are prepaid and there are no refunds.

Here’s how it works: You will be assigned a different table for each course. While you enjoy your salad, everyone at the table will be asked to share business cards or other creative tokens from your place of business, also give a short summary on your business/services. Then, you will move to another assigned table for the entree and a third table for dessert. At each table you will meet new people and again, exchange information about your business. Each person at the table will have approximately 3-4 minutes at each course to promote his or her business, and each course is approximately twenty minutes. By the time lunch is over, you will have gained many contacts. Be sure to bring plenty of business cards, or items and information to share! This power lunch is a fun and rewarding event for both you and your business!
